Presenting our 'Ōpe'ape'a Kāpala koa wood earrings design. The Hawaiian word 'Ōpe'ape'a means bat. The Hawaiian hoary bat is the only native terrestrial mammal found in the Hawaiian Island chain.
Fossil evidence has shown that at least one other bat species was native to the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaiian bat has a wingspan of about one foot or a third of a meter. Female bats are usually larger than males. Hawaiian bats have a coat of brown and gray fur. Note that the individual hairs of the Hawaiian bats are tipped or frosted with white thus adding to the bats' name hoary meaning frosted. The bats' Hawaiian name 'Ōpe'ape'a specifically refers to a half taro leaf or canoe sail shape which bears a striking resemblance to the shape of the native Hawaiian bat.
The Opeapea is made of the finest reclaimed Hawaiian koa hardwood grown on the BIg Island of Hawaii.
